I think I mentioned before I’ve been a fan of James Brown since I was 12 and 1968 he’s been my favorite performer I saw him about 100 times in concert from the early 1970s to the 2000s. I’ve got all his records and 45s I met him a few times and all that good stuff. He was 31 years old here this is the earliest concert performance of Mr. Brown that we know of that caption on film. This is considered his greatest dancing captured on film. There are some other great performances from that show too are reacting to. OUT OF SIGHT, PRISONER OF LOVE and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. If you can find the over eight minute medley on the Ed Sullivan show from 1966 that’s an awesome one to react to also. IT’S A MAN’S WORLD from 1981 live is a great thing to react to also. As someone who was a victim of child abuse, and who loves Pat Benatar, this song always spoke to me more than Hell is for Children. I feel the fact she is singing from Luka's perspective is why. For me, "Luka" is a empathy song, whilst "Hell is for Children" is a sympathy song. For me, when i was a kid, it was an open secret that I was a victim of abuse amongst my extended family; Aunts/Uncles/Grandparents. And sure I got sympathy, but sympathy did nothing to stop the abuse. Empathy does not stop abuse either but it felt more comforting than sympathy ever did.

One of the things that I love the most is that even during racially charged times like the 60’s, “game recognizes game”. Music and art just brings people together. White artists who were influenced by black artists told everyone they could how great these artists were and that they should be heard! It’s sad to say, but I feel like there were more integrated rock and soul bands in the 60’s and 70’s than there are today. And we just loved music, together. We didn’t think about race being “such a thing” about everything back then. Radio stations played everything like a big, delicious Gumbo!!

The T.A.M.I. Show was filmed at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on October 28 and 29, 1964. Tickets to the concerts were given away free! James Brown taught Mick Jagger how to dance and properly front a rock band that night. The crowd was integrated because racial segregation in California was less overt than in the South back then and also, perhaps, because the Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibiting racial segregation in public accommodations, took effect a few months prior on July 2, 1964 -- just in time for Independence Day. The studio version of "Night Train", released in 1962, shuffles along at a slower pace than that found in this performance, and beyond Brown's shout outs to all the cities on his tour, it's filled with sax fills and a super funky bass line that inspired teenage bands from London to Jamaica.

Empress, this is a highly, highly HIGHLY important moment, not just for James, Pop Music & TV, but for RACE RELATIONS, too; aired in Dec., 1964, this was One of the VERY few moments Blacks got to be featured on (white) TV....segregation was still in effect, and there wasn't even an 'R&B charts' then, to tally what were the hottest selling Soul singles were.... - ...THIS performance, helped change that! ...while the Supremes were on the bill, *FUNK* wasn't; James BULLDOZED Funk into White Homes with this Show / performance, and was doing the very things they feared ELVIS doing! ..his showy, energetic performance READIED Whites to Tina Turner, The Temps, Jackson Five, Gladys Knight & The Pips, etc. later on....(1:54) .... - It also premiered his TRADEMARK; The 'Cape' that was thrown on his back, and he's walked off by his helpers....then, comes ROARIN' back, to give more! ..Afterwards, the R&B charts were reinstated (April 1965), The Supremes were the BIG act afterwards, The Beatles & The Rolling Stones sang the praises of these R&B Acts, and SOUL became defined as a theatrical, thrilling spectacle....for EVERYONE..... .....and James, became ..... *THE GODFATHER* .....A VERY important moment..... 💋🐂 I love this special so much. Kurt pushes the nerd-perv humour a little much, but she parleys it with perfect charm. I can see Kurt looking like a misfit in the pop reporter role to someone outside of 90s culture because now people are matched to the style they’re reporting on more. Then, because he was senior at MTV, he’d report on acts across genres and his generally unimpressed, droll but intelligent and insightful interview mode was the exact mood of the era. The 90s was all about being dry and cool and only expressing enthusiasm with a heavy dose of wryness. It was the end of an epic century, and that lent the culture a sort of exhausted glamour. A very similar mood characterised the end of the 19th Century too. The term is “fin de siecle”, French for “end of century”. I love Madonna’s sass in this special too. Especially her response to Janet doing a typical low key puritanical diss of Madonna when she essentially said that “I do sexy with more class”, implying Madonna was common or too overt for her Jehovah’s Witness tastes. Madonna’s elegant response “Rather transparent, wouldn’t you say…” calling out Janet’s attempt to hop on Madonna’s S&M inspired sexy bandwagon while also distancing herself from any real commitment to the actual culture of sexual freedom. I love a lot of Janet’s stuff, and grew up worshipping Michael, but their capitalising on the image of sex while being so morally opposed to sexual freedom, let alone any real inference of queerness, has always rubbed me the wrong way. This kind of leads me to reiterating my strong disagree on her being sorry about the Erotica era. There’s a huge difference between having a traumatic time while doing something brave that you believe in, then pivoting to other interests because she felt boxed in by public perception, and feeling SORRY she did the Erotica era. I think she’s proud of the Erotica era, but just doesn’t want to be pinned down or limited to that public perception. Being shrewd (and she’s the shrewdest) isn’t the same as having regrets. Interesting that while Bedtime Stories is considered a strong album for her, it’s Erotica that has received its retrospective dues as a truly groundbreaking album, and is almost always listed as one of her essential records. I don’t think it’s Madonna’s fault that people couldn’t concentrate on the quality of the music on Erotica. I think it’s the fault of the immaturity and underlying puritan values of a mainstream public who get so distracted my sexual display that they can’t think straight. Or maybe they think too damn STRAIGHT 😂 Even in her responses about the bull fighting theme of the video, she speaks as an artist exploring a mood before she considers the broader issues of the sport. The tragedy and cruelty of it capture the feeling of tragedy and cruelty that can come from intense affairs of the heart, and the risk to bodily safety was an ever present consideration in sex in the 90s, so that works as a metaphor too. Oscar Wilde said that artists must begin from a state of immorality because creation should be first instinctual, not moral. Morality can be brought in later, or not, but the first consideration must be pure and without the societal constraint. I love Madonna for her open contradictions, genuine commitment to her messages, and consistent transparency about exploring things without having all the answers. Despite her formidable intelligence and her affectations of arrogance, she always arrives at a point of questioning both the world and herself in order to grow. PS: The director Michael Haussmann is cuuute. PPS: Madonna’s self written and directed biographical film is back on. It was paused due to her tour, and her tour became an autobiographical expression of its own. But Julia Garner is reconfirmed as principal cast and the project is going ahead 📝🎬📣

Funny how I listen to this on the way home. Even though I'm at 80's baby, I think ti was Vice City or San Andreas that played this song on the in-game radio stations. This song is timelessly bangin, with black and white collaborating. They gave us this tune to listen til the end of time, and to remind us we can do great things when unified <3. Black, white, hispanice....Everybody was bustin on the floor back then.

She looks beautiful even with that up-down do (maybe she should’ve performed Up-Down Suite 😂). Her hair’s giving mullet extensions, but the dress is gorgeous. Her ‘dancing’ here is giving jet lag but she warms up to it. I always get the impression she feels a bit silly lip-syncing, doing her sexy sensual music video faces instead of her gutsy genuine singing live faces. Especially with them passing off some random dude as Babyface! 2 absolutely brilliant songs that I will always love. It’s a pleasure seeing you just watch all of Take a Bow without comment because the song is always enough on its own. Perfection. And shout out to Baby Empress dancing in the background!✨

If you are not familiar with it, you might also enjoy Earth, Wind and Fire's awesome song "Fantasy." And I also highly recommend the R&B dance bop "Fantastic Voyage" by Lakeside. We used to rush the dance floor back in the day when we heard it start playing. I recommend the longer album version with more verses and instrumental solos that's 6 minutes, 45 minutes long (as opposed to the shorter radio version).

Ok trivia from a German: Wetten Dass was actually a Prime Time tv show in Germany that in the 90s had huge ratings like 15 million viewers in Germany alone. It was also shown in Austria and Switzerland, so everywhere in German speaking Europe. I think the US had a shortlived Version of it as well called Wanna Bet. The German Original was a mix of gameshow were contestants betted they can do extraordinary things, over the years it got more action packed and extreme but it was a family show. Between the bets, they had huge high profile superstars perform and get interviewed, also pretty much all major Movie stars went there to promote their movies. From what i remember Madonna performed there once in 1995, twice in 1998, once in 2000 and once in 2005. At least those i have seen on youtube. She was usually guest of the couch too for an interview. Safe family fun. Those were also the years where she did the most European promo period and it paid off. You can tell she wanted Bedtime Stories to do more than Erotica and it did and well Ray of Light brought her back to selling 20 million but lets not get ahead of ourselves.

Wetten, dass..? was a nighttime show. In fact, at the time it was the biggest show in Europe. They were known for the elaborate sets they built specifically for each musical guest. Everybody lip-synced, though. And so did Madonna here obviously. But she did look AMAZING. One of my all time favorite Madonna looks.
